UrbanLight – Optimized LED street lighting for Vienna
UrbanLight – Optimized LED street lighting for Vienna – Siegmund Staggl, Wilfried Pohl – Bartenbach GmbH
In Vienna, 80% of the total stock of conventional catenary suspension luminaires is currently in use for up to 60 years. They will now be converted to LED in the years 2017 – 2020. For this purpose, together with the MA33 of the City of Vienna, a new LED lighting modul was developed that allows for standardization, considers ecological aspects and has the greatest possible sustainability in terms of maintenance and quality for both, users and residents. In particular the focus was on visual quality, visual comfort and the safety of road users.
In this respect, fundamental investigations were made in ‘Urban Light’, a project sponsored by the FFG: in a Viennese street three different lighting systems (old fluorescent lighting, advanced LED lighting and perception-optimized LED lighting) were installed in a field trial and qualitatively and quantitatively evaluated by various user groups (about 1500 pedestrians, cyclists, motorists and residents) through surveys, behavioral observations and video recordings. Visibility, glare and safety of the road users were in the foreground. In addition, the perceptual-psychological relationships were verified in the laboratory under controlled experimental conditions. The results provide guidelines for optimal LED street lighting.
