What is Li-Fi? Everything You Need to Know: Opportunities & Challenges
Imagine a world where every one of the billions of lightbulbs in use today is a wireless hotspot delivering connectivity at speeds that can only be dreamed of with Wi-Fi. This is an opportunity that became possible thanks to LiFi technology. Light Fidelity or LiFi is a Visible Light Communications (VLC) system running wireless communications travelling at very high speeds. LiFi uses common household LED (light emitting diodes) light bulbs to enable data transfer, boasting speeds of up to 224 gigabits per second. The technology has became an international standard for wireless communication in its first version in November 2011 by the International Telecommunications Standardisation Committee. The progressive replacement of the 14 billion light points in the world by LEDs makes LiFi a strong candidate to become the 3rd generation communication network (after the wired network and the radio network) and potentially the densest.
During this presentation, what LiFi technology is, how it works and what are the applications in the short, medium and long term. We will review the advantages and limitations of the technology as well as the technical aspects to implement a LiFi installation. Finally, I will present concrete achievements implemented since 2012 in the field of B2B using this technology and a real-time demonstration of the technology using the first LiFi product available “on the shelf” on the market.
We will finish the presentation by an overview of the future developments and the challenges needed by LiFi technology to reach the mass market.
