SCHEER Report – LED Potential Risks to Human Health

The introduction of LED has brought with it concerns about the potential risks this technology may pose for human health. LightingEurope is coordinating the European industry’s response to these concerns, most recently with the publication of the SCHEER draft report on LEDs. This presentation will evaluate the preliminary conclusions of this report and the knowledge gaps it has identified. The EU Scientific Committee on Health, Environment and Emerging Risks (SCHEER) has published on 19 July 2017, a Preliminary Opinion on potential risks to human health of Light Emitting Diodes. This is a draft report with the intention to enable interested parties to provide additional scientific input and/or clarification until 17 September 2017.

The review of the published research conducted by the SCHEER has led to valuable conclusions and identified certain gaps in knowledge on potential risks to human health from LEDs. The Committee concluded that there is no evidence of direct adverse health effects from LEDs emission in normal use (lamps and displays) by the general healthy population.

About SCHEER: SCHEER is an independent Committee providing the Commission with the scientific advice it needs when preparing policy and proposals relating to consumer safety, public health and the environment. The Scientific Committees review and evaluate relevant scientific data and assess potential risks. Each Committee has top independent scientists from all over the world who are committed to work in the public interest.
