Dr. Paul Rudy has worked in the field of lasers and photonics for 20 years. Paul is a co-founder and SVP of SoraaLaser, a leader in the commercialization of laser light sources for automotive and specialty lighting applications. Dr. Paul Rudy has extensive experience in technical product management and strategic business development, and is faculty part time at Loyola Marymount University’s Center for Entrepreneurship. Earlier in his career, Dr. Rudy worked as director of marketing and business development at Coherent, the world’s largest commercial laser manufacturer. Dr. Rudy received his MBA from USC, doctoral degree in physics from the University of Rochester, and undergraduate degrees in physics and philosophy from Duke University.
Laser Light Sources for Specialty Illumination Applications
Recent progress in development of high power blue laser diodes and their integration with phosphors have enabled a new category of solid state light sources that deliver advanced illumination effects from novel form factors. In this presentation, we discuss the merits and challenges of laser light compared to other lighting technologies (LEDs, OLEDs, and legacy sources), more precisely in relation to specialty lighting.
An update on the capabilities of laser light technology is provided including progress in luminous flux, luminance, efficacy, and color quality. Recently developed, innovative laser light modules will be presented that produce highly directional and precisely shaped spotlight illumination. These enable novel laser light sources as micro-luminaries, ultra-short throw modules, and waveguide delivered remote sources. High contrast illumination patterns will be demonstrated.
